OK, before I start, I must tell you a little story about Mother Metal. As most of you know, the tarot has been with me for over 40 years. In all that time I never found a female image among the lower arcana cards that I could identify with. Friends and clients would gleefully report, as 'their' cards turned up, "That's me!" But for me there was never a Queen or a Mother that I resonated with.

On my months long search through the archives of stock photography to find the images for the cards I had many preconceived ideas for most of the cards. I knew what the energy was and so, in the context of the elements, images came right to mind...but not for the Mother of Metal. Then, one day, looking for something else entirely, there she was and the moment I spotted her I knew that this was the perfect image and that here, finally, after 40 years, was my card.

I am always especially delighted when she pays a visit. She is a female energy in a male element, an element that embodies the power of the will. Others will never know the depths of her ability to exercise her will power because she does not display that. Her struggles are no one's but hers and she will prevail.
