IX The Hermit

IX The Hermit
Looking Inward, you find the wisdom to share with others. It is the element of sharing that makes lovely IX so different from V, Wisdom. V is a contemplative card, the figure on it silhouetted against a window that looks out on the world. It is a card that speaks of a connection to the Divine in oneself. V looks inward; stays there. IX is clearly seen, out where anyone could see in the bright light of day as she walks purposefully inward; you want to follow. You can.
The number nine is the number of completion, it is the number that comes after the sublime success of the number eight. Raised to its highest power in the Major Arcana, "9" becomes "IX," the number before "X," "9" is the number that comes before the new thought, it is the energy that goes into creating the fertilized seed that will one day germinate.
The Hermit suggests not only the contemplation of previous thoughts and deeds but the practical wisdom that comes from doing so hence the appearance of IX in a reading has always been seen either as a nudge to seek wise counsel or as a reminder that, if you are the bearer of wisdom, there may be a need for you to hang out a sign in some way so that someone who is seeking the knowledge that you have can find you.
IX is wisdom processed and made useful in the world. Ironically, The Hermit reminds us of the necessity of the other.
